My name is Melissa ("Mel") Martin, and I'm running to serve on Cocoa's City Council, District 3.
I was born and raised in Central Florida and have grown a deep appreciation for our compassionate people, wild lands and pristine waters. After a career in the US Marine Corps, I returned with my family to a state I barely recognized; conflicts of interest in government, reckless development overpowering the will (and infrastructure) of communities, ever-growing legal protections for pollution industries...
Such state policies have wreaked havoc for communities and our regional economies, and it's time to push back and reclaim home rule authority to protect and promote the health, safety and welfare of our community.
Since retiring as a Marine Judge Advocate, I've considered Florida's environment and public trust as my clients in the pro bono work I've done over the last five years, fighting primarily for government integrity and clean water. Through this, I've come to realize that in order to effectively change our systems, we have to work closer to home, where tangible planning and action take place for the benefit of our health, safety and quality of life...which brings me back to our beautiful Cocoa.
I'm running to serve on the City Council to help guard the integrity of processes, to ensure our city responsibly transitions to sustainable policies, and to resolutely conserve what is precious to us. We can listen to, learn from and promote the interests of our business owners and residents to see our city thrive.
I'd love the honor and privilege of using the knowledge and skills I've grown in as a Marine, as an attorney and as a member of this community, to the benefit of Cocoa and all her potential.
Thank you for considering me in your decision to support candidates in 2020.
